What is Functional Nutrition?
Functional Nutrition is a personalized, holistic approach to health that focuses on how food affects the body at a deeper level, considering individual factors like genetics, lifestyle, and environment. It emphasizes the idea that food is not just fuel but also a tool to improve overall health and address the root causes of illness, rather than just treating symptoms.
Key elements of Functional Nutrition include personalized nutrition plans, root cause approach, holistic view, whole foods emphasis, and prevention-focus.
How is Functional Nutrition Different?
Functional Nutritionist
- Value a holistic approach that looks at the whole person.
- Focus on root causes of health issues, not just symptoms.
- Create personalized plans based on genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors.
- Integrate alternative approaches like supplements, detoxes, and stress management.
- Emphasize overall wellness and prevention, often looking beyond immediate dietary needs.
Registered Dietician (RD)
- Follow strict guidelines, which may limit the use of alternative or holistic approaches.
- Rely on national dietary standards, which might not feel personalized enough for those seeking tailored care.
- Address immediate health concerns and symptom management rather than diving into root causes.
- May have limited time for each patient, which could affect the depth of care and individual attention.
